When I was coming up with the design for this project my only goal was to find something simple. The kind of project where you can just get to work without too much complexity. This is about as simple as it gets, a large box with three small boxes. When a project is described as simple, it sometimes gets confused as being easy and although this project, compared to some of my others is easier, it still involved hand cut joinery and some key details that made it not boring.

I wish I had more elegant words to say about this project but overall, the purpose was to get off to a good start this year with a project that had a good chance of success as well as to try doing something with a more modern look.

What I’ve found after having this bookshelf hanging in my office for a few months now is that as a stand alone piece, it doesn’t look too bad but compared to my other pieces of furniture it doesn’t stand out as being something special. That’s not to say I don’t like this project, it’s mainly a case of, I’m in a very experimental mindset right now when it comes to my woodworking and the simplicity of this project while good sometimes, didn’t satisfy my desire to improve myself further.

I will say, the apple wood was a nice touch and I’m very excited to finally be able to use some of that wood!

Project Details

  • Primary Wood: White Ash

  • Secondary Wood: Apple Wood

  • Stain: India Ink

  • Finish: Osmo Polx-Oil

  • Structural Joinery: Through Dovetails

  • Drawer Joinery: Pinned Rabbets

Key Lessons

  • India ink gives a good pure black finish but easily wears off on the edges

  • Keeping the design simple is good sometimes, this project is literally just a box with some smaller boxes!

  • I prefer the more natural Tried & True Oils compared to Osmo Polx Oil
